Progress Report: Sunshine and Water

Hammond, Louisiana. Thursday, January 14, 2010.

To the left is a photo of the obelisk I've been seeing all over the former Republic of West Florida, illustrating (and describing on the base) the florid history of the region. This version is in the middle of Hammond, near the train station.

Today the weather is exceptionally fine. Very sunny and warm, probably in the low 60s. It occurs to me that I'm squandering a good day for walking, since it is supposed to rain for the next two days. But if it's too wet to walk tomorrow, so be it.

This morning I got the water tank filled, and it looks as if all is well and things are back to normal. There was a little leaking around the water pump, which I managed to almost eliminate by tightening certain connections. A bit of thread tape would have been in order, but I didn't have any, so I put a liberal glob of duct tape over everything instead. It's all on the outer part of the motor home, anyway, so a trickle won't hurt. In my experience as a laissez faire home handyman, small leaks in plumbing joints usually seal themselves by means of the accretion of deposits of the minerals in the water around the area in question. And considering that the problem could have been much more dire, I am now basking in my good fortune and my half-assed repair job.

Now it's on to the laundromat, where the real fun awaits.

I moan: " Your brains! Your poor brains! The longer you dally in Louisiana, the greater the risk of frying your brains in Central and West Texas! Don't be lulled by today's mild weather. It's the Southwest summer that's just around the corner!" Anguish

...not to mention, its mile after mile after mile of nothing (unless you like rock)once you get a ways past Austin.

But enjoy your time in Louisiana eating some great Cajun cooking and fab seafood. When you get to Kaplin, say hey to John Boy. And watch out for those gators...they live in trees by the sides of the road. Swear ta hell… I'm not a drinkin' man. I've seen them.

I take all gator admonitions with the utmost seriousness. Any chance they're hibernating right now?
